A board that governs well is an asset. Below is a menu of questions the board should regularly ask itself to assure it is engaging all board members to fulfill their duties effectively.

  1. Do your board members ask themselves at least annually what skills and resources they bring to the table and how effectively they are being utilized?

  2. How are board members showing to the public their passion and commitment to the organization?  Are those efforts sufficient and/or convincing?

  3. Do some board members say nothing during a meeting?  How can you tap their insights?

  4. Do you actively seek out board members' doubts, concerns, or worries about a strategy, policy, or course of action?

  5. Do you ensure that each member's opinions are known and that each member has a sufficient understanding of the issue at hand and its importance to the organization?

  6. What skills and experience does your  board lack and how can you recruit to gain missing talent and energy?

  7. Are we focusing our efforts on our top priorities?

  8. Are we accomplishing what we need to accomplish this year?

  9. Are we able to sustain our current level of services for the foreseeable future?

  10. What sequence of events is assumed to occur that will result in the budgeted revenues being received in the amount and at the time estimated?

  11. When will the board review whether the anticipated sequence of revenue events has occurred?

  12. What steps will be taken if the actual revenue turns out to be significantly higher or lower than expected?
