A board that governs well is an asset. Below is a menu of questions the board should regularly ask itself to assure it is engaging all board members to fulfill their duties effectively.
- Do your board members ask themselves at least annually what skills and resources they bring to the table and how effectively they are being utilized?
- How are board members showing to the public their passion and commitment to the organization? Are those efforts sufficient and/or convincing?
- Do some board members say nothing during a meeting? How can you tap their insights?
- Do you actively seek out board members' doubts, concerns, or worries about a strategy, policy, or course of action?
- Do you ensure that each member's opinions are known and that each member has a sufficient understanding of the issue at hand and its importance to the organization?
- What skills and experience does your board lack and how can you recruit to gain missing talent and energy?
- Are we focusing our efforts on our top priorities?
- Are we accomplishing what we need to accomplish this year?
- Are we able to sustain our current level of services for the foreseeable future?
- What sequence of events is assumed to occur that will result in the budgeted revenues being received in the amount and at the time estimated?
- When will the board review whether the anticipated sequence of revenue events has occurred?
- What steps will be taken if the actual revenue turns out to be significantly higher or lower than expected?
